We as exercise enthusiasts are used to getting out of our comfort zone- or are we? This post is designed to explore the need to get out of our comfort zone during our workouts and push ourselves past our own limits to ensure we are always getting the most out of our workouts. Here is an excerpt I wrote on dfgwellness.blogspot.com that discusses just this phenomenon:
"Fear keeps us in our comfort zone. It is one of those things that comes into us in every situation. I own a CrossFit gym and have recently been working with people whom have been filled with nothing but self-doubt and fear. When I look at them with confidence and demonstrate to them they have it in them to complete an exercise or a workout, the fear starts to subside, but they always look at me as if it will be the worst experience in the world. It is their self talk that is putting the fear or doubt in them. This is when it is MOST important to break out of your comfort zone, to push through, to burn a little, to drive a little harder, to dream a little more, to get out of your head, to get into the mindset of I can rather than I can't, to put aside the doubts we have of ourselves and start believing in ourselves more than we ever have! It is times like this such as at a CrossFit workout when you have to put aside what you think you know of yourself and stop existing in that comfort zone and BLOW THROUGH THE DOORS in a way in which power has never been exerted before!!!"

There are many times when we are intimidated by a workout, by the potential of not "RX-ing" the workout, not performing to the best of our ability or in general just not doing what we know we can do. Our minds become one of our most powerful enemies in all we do. It overcomes our body's ability to perform incredible feats. I know you have heard of the grandmother that lifts a car to save her grandchild. this is truly an act of the body overcoming the mind. How is it that that can occur at that level, but when it comes to our own workouts, our own lives, we stop and allow the fear to overcome us, and stop allowing ourselves to perform to the best of our ability.
Personally, I know when a workout starts, or when the bell goes off, or when 3-2-1 go is said, I stop thinking ... period. I know many of you think that Coach K is a little out there and completely nuts for working out consistently at high intensity several times per day... regardless of being sore, tired, or whatever may be going on. I realize that MOST times, my performance will be hindered by my mentality if I allow it to be. When I realize I am tired, or just simply "not in the mood" to work-out, I put that aside and focus on the goal at hand not worrying about the outcome at that point, but allowing myself to exist in the moment, be in the present and step out of my own comfort zone and push through with the most intensity I can muster. Most times, I surprise myself. You are NO different. In fact, I would imagine that several times in the gym you have surprised yourself and overcome many obstacles once you stepped out of the box and tried soemthing new.
The other challenge I hear in our gym is "I don't want to". We KNOW you don't want to.. that's why you HAVE to!! Make sure that what you are doing is pushing yourself to ensure you are getting the best results you can muster. It is so important to get out of what you think you can't do and get into what you need to try to make sure you CAN do it!!!
